New Zealand has its fair share of marathons. The iconic Auckland marathon course gives runners the pretty unique opportunity to run across the famous Auckland Harbour Bridge, however one of the most popular races in New Zealand is the Gazley Volkswagen Wellington Marathon.

Held in June every year, the course is a great one for all levels of athlete. Starting at the famous Westpac Stadium, the course is flat and fast making it perfect for first-timers or those looking to smash a personal best. The course is also really scenic as it takes you along Wellington’s stunning waterfront which provides a great spot for spectators to come and cheer on family and friends.

This year the Wellington Marathon will be held on Sunday 18 June. The race has been running since 1986 so this will be the 31st Wellington Marathon. With over 5,000 runners and walkers expected again this year, it promises to be another fantastic day. It’s not too late to enter one of the races so if you fancy pushing yourself, why not enter the Wellington Marathon – you know you want to!

What races are available?

The big race of the day is obviously the full marathon but there are also plenty of other races to suit all fitness levels. If you are not quite ready to push on to a full marathon, why not give the half marathon a whirl. There’s also a 10k and 5k course as well as a kids’ magic mile which is brilliant for the younger ones who are just starting out with their running.

Awesome competitions

If you’re a serious competitor, there are some great incentives on offer in the Wellington Marathon. The first man over the line in Wellington will win a trip to Japan for the 2018 Senshu Marathon. Last year was the first time Wellington partnered with the Sakai City Government and last year the first female over the line won this awesome trip to Japan. The plan is to alternate between the men and women’s winner each year so even if you miss out this year, make sure you get in training for the amazing opportunity to win a trip to Japan!

Even if you’re not an elite athlete competing for that winner’s prize, there is another amazing opportunity to win a trip to the Paris Marathon. Every participant has a chance of winning this fantastic prize which includes flights, accommodation and entry fee. All you need to do is complete the Wellington marathon and drop your race number into the box as you head to the prize giving ceremony. A lucky entrant will be drawn at random so there’s another incentive to enter this year!

There are heaps of other prizes available on the day and you can find out more here: http://www.wellingtonmarathon.co.nz/info/categories-awards/

We hope we have inspired you to don your running gear and get yourself down to Wellington for the weekend. A number of our team based down in Wellington take part in the race and it’s always a great day out. Hopefully see you there!
