I had dreamt of being a Hollywood star once, with an A-list girlfriend and a mansion bigger than a mall. I’ve even dreamt of being a Bollywood star, with sharp Indian dance moves and singing with Bengal Tigers prancing around me. But I’ve never dreamt of being a Wellywood star? And what would a Wellywood star look like? Peter Jackson? Temuera Morrison? Yeah umm no thanks.
It’s interesting to see the amount of criticism directed at the idea, and the support of it as well. But for those of you who don’t know about the Wellywood sign, it is basically a replica of the Hollywood sign in Los Angeles, California but instead says “Wellywood”. This topic has become top news over the week on TV, newspaper and the internet.
Let’s try and look at it from both angles. The benefits of having the Wellywood sign up would potentially bring in more international tourists, particularly for New Zealand’s film industry, who can hire their rental cars from GO Rentals Wellywood office. Some even say it’s a fun, quirky way of showcasing New Zealand. This versus the detractors who are the locals, the majority of Wellington Councillors, the New Zealand Prime Minister – John Key and even me, the GO Rentals Guy 😉
It just isn’t creative at all and is completely un-original therefore why do it? Whose lame idea was it in the first place? So for those who think it is a good idea and support the Wellywood sign, go hide under a rock. But if you support our GO Rentals sign, we proudly salute you!
If it does go up and you need to get away from it, there are still a lot of beautiful places for you to explore around Wellington. Don’t settle for creativity gone wrong, because Wellington is considered to be the Cultural capital of NZ. Just don’t let the windy weather blow you away.
