Whitianga Scallop Festival – Yum!

Updated: 1 September 2017

Fast approaching is one of the Coromandel’s biggest and best events of the year – the Whitianga Scallop Festival. Not only is it a huge event down on the Peninsula, the Whitianga Scallop Festival is one of New Zealand’s biggest and best seafood events and there is no better time to head down to the Coromandel to indulge in lots of seafood yumminess!

Scallop Festival events and activities

The main attraction at the festival is, as the name would suggest, the scallops. These delicious, freshly caught gems can be eaten in pretty much any way you can think of and with over 60 cuisine stands turning out mouth-watering dishes, you can try lots of different recipes over the course of the day.

In addition to the cuisine stands, the Scallop Festival also welcomes iconic chefs from across NZ including Ray McVinnie Nadia Lim and Aaron Gascoigne and Aaron Freeman.

The Whitianga Scallop Festival Facebook page is a great place to keep up to date with everything that is going on throughout the day and they have been running competitions in the lead up to the event which kicks off on the 16 September. You can also check out their website for details of the full weekend programme, information about competitions running throughout the festival and some delicious scallop inspired recipes.

As well as lots of delicious food on offer, there’s also some great entertainment planned including live music from the Vegas Brown Band, Knights of the Dub Table, Coral Pitcher and Tim Armstrong. There will also be a wide selection of craft stalls for you to wander around in between scallop courses in what promises to be a fantastic event. New World are the main sponsor of the event and they have a Cooking Stage where demonstrations will be taking place throughout the day. There will also be the Mac’s Music Stage and Mills Reef Music Stage so plenty to keep you entertained throughout the day.
