When you head to the zoo in New Zealand, it’s not the same as heading to your local city zoo. Instead, New Zealand’s biggest zoos are made up of major habitats and are chock full of unique animals. If you’re planning on spending some time in New Zealand, these 3 zoos should be on your itinerary:
1. Auckland Zoo
New Zealand’s biggest city is called the “City of Sails”, but it might as well be called the “City of Animals”. The Auckland Zoo offers more than 120 different species – making it New Zealand’s biggest collection of animals and one of the most unique zoos in the world!
While you’re there, you can check out everything from the African Clawed Frog to the Zebra Finch. And, lots of the animals are native to New Zealand, so you’ll get a chance to see things like kiwis and tuataras. The Auckland Zoo opens every day at 9:30 AM, so you can get an early start on all the action!
2. Wellington Zoo
This New Zealand zoo is home to 100 species of animals from 4 different continents. Some of the animals are endangered, and some of them can only be found in New Zealand, so a trip to this zoo will allow you to meet animals you couldn’t have met anywhere else. You can even sleepover if you want! While you’re there, head to The Stores, where you can watch chefs prepare special meals for the animals.
- Orana Wildlife Park
“Orana” is the Maori word for “place of refuge”, and this wildlife park offers just that! As New Zealand’s only open-range zoo, Orana puts endangered species in an environment that’s just like their natural habitat – only safer.
