Mt Makara / Makara peak and Mt Kaukau. These are large hills near Wellington City centre. We can see the whole of Wellington City from the top of the hills. Some tourists are only looking for short hikes in nature near Wellington, so I would recommend this spot because the hills are only a 15- to 20-minute drive from the CBD and will only take a 90-minute return walk. These spots are good to know how close Wellington is to our beautiful nature.

  • Jess from the Wellington Branch

One of my favourite things to do during the winter is to visit the Wellington Zoo and meet our latest additions to the zoo, the snow leopards – they’ve been with us for a year now. A 10-minute drive from there are some beautiful cafes at Lyall Bay with beautiful views and beautiful food. And then, for a lovely winter’s night, you can take a walk around Oriental Parade and see the fountain light up and see the beautiful lights of the waterfront in Wellington.

  • Alex from the Wellington Branch

Pinnacles Track Wairarapa - Adopt the pace of nature while exploring the beauty of the landscape and the excellent view of Palliser Bay and Lake Onoke. The walk can take 2-4 hours depending on the track you choose.

There are some great beaches to visit near Whanganui including South Beach, Kai Iwi Beach, and Castlecliff Beach.

  • Watch your speed:
New Zealand roads can sometimes be winding and narrow, especially in coastal and rural regions. Pay attention to the marked speed limits. Adjust your speed based on the road and weather conditions.
  • Fuel up before you head to rural areas:
The major towns we’ve highlighted along the Wellington to Whanganui drive have plenty of service stations, but you should plan to fuel up before you head into rural areas like the stretch between Feilding and Whanganui. Be sure to check your fuel levels and top up if necessary in locations like Levin or Palmerston North.

The weather in New Zealand is notoriously unpredictable, especially when travelling between regions. Pack accordingly and check each day’s forecast. Be prepared for cold temperatures in the winter, especially in the early morning and evening.
  • Respect the environment:
New Zealand is known for its pristine natural beauty, and we at GO Rentals are committed to helping preserve it. Opt for one of our hybrid or electric vehicles to offset your carbon footprint.
